Assessing the Influence of Language on the ImPACT test

Lead Physician: Summer D. Ott, Psy.D. (McGovern Medical School at UTHealth) and co-investigator Margaret Blake, Ph.D. (University of Houston)

Over the past decade, the practice of baseline and post-injury neuropsychological assessment has been adopted by many as a standard of care in concussion management for professional, collegiate, and high school sports. The Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment Test (ImPACT) is the mostly widely utilized tool for monitoring neurocognitive recovery following sports related concussion. The ImPACT test has been translated in to many languages, yet it is unclear whether the language of administration might affect performance on the test. This study is designed to assess whether language differences may occur, thus informing the practice of assessing bilingual examinees in their preferred language.
