Nutrition Counseling Services

Whether you’re a distance runner, football player, gymnast, soccer player, a cyclist or triathlete, our experts understand the key role nutrition plays in achieving athletic performance. Registered Dietitians help you understand, plan and execute nutrition strategies for daily living, training and competing. 

At the Institute’s state-of-the-art facility located in the Texas Medical Center, we offer a comprehensive suite of nutrition-based testing and  counseling services. Our experts integrate nutrition strategies with comprehensive strength and conditioning programs developed by the coaches, therapists and sports medicine physicians of the Institute. 

Better Fueling for Performance Starts Here

  • Sport Nutrition Assessment and Consultation: The nutrition assessment determines an athlete’s nutrition needs based on body type, sport, metabolic rate, and short- and long-term performance goals. Each consultation is unique to each athlete and includes specific  recommendations to help athletes reach and maintain peak performance. 
  • Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Measurement: Measuring your resting metabolic rate tells you the amount of calories your body burns when at  rest. Additional calories are added to the RMR to determine total calories needed per day. Knowing an athlete’s RMR can help with weight  management and nutrition planning. 
  • Body Composition Analysis: Body composition analysis uses hydrostatic weighing to measure the amount of fat versus lean tissue as a percentage of an athlete’s total weight. Body mass and body composition in athletes vary by sport and position and can be improved through nutrition and exercise. 
  • Calories Per Hour Running or Cycling: The calories per hour expended while running or cycling can help you plan your nutrition for these activities. The calories expended per hour for running is calculated at various speeds while you run on a treadmill. The calories expended per hour for cycling is calculated while you ride your bicycle on a Computrainer® at either various cycling speeds or watts.

Nutrition Counseling Packages

Whatever sport you choose to pursue, the nutrition experts at the Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine Institute offer nutrition counseling options to help you fuel for peak performance, in the gym, on the field, or on the track. We offer nutrition counseling services in convenient packages, a la carte, or customized to your unique needs.

Base Nutrition: $120
This package is designed for athletes who want information about their body composition and energy needs, and guidance about fueling for daily activities.

  • Body composition testing, which uses under-water weighing and estimates Resting Energy Expenditure (REE)
  • Initial nutrition consultation
  • Unlimited email support for 30 days after meeting
  • Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) measurement, which can be substituted for body composition testing for an additional $25

Advanced Nutrition: $400
This package is designed for those who want to change their body composition, lose weight, or make permanent changes to their eating habits. Those wanting to focus on fueling for their sport can also benefit from this package. Sessions will focus on fueling before and after workout, fueling for training and competing, and hydration.

  • Body composition testing, which includes estimated REE or measured RMR
  • Initial nutrition consultation
  • Five 50-minute follow-up nutrition consultations scheduled within 6 months of initial consultation
  • Unlimited email support during the package and 30 days after the final meeting

Comprehensive Nutrition: $700
This package is designed to begin four to five months prior to a specific competitive event or the start of the sports season. It includes everything in the Advanced package plus a race nutrition plan with specific, customized performance nutrition guidance. If you log your food in an online program, the dietitian will review it weekly and provide suggestions and comments. It also includes unlimited email support with the dietitian.

  • Two body composition tests, including estimated REE or two RMR measurements
  • Initial nutrition consultation
  • Five 50-minute follow-up nutrition consultations
  • Competition nutrition plan
  • Weekly review and comments on food log
  • Unlimited email support during the package period, plus 30 days after completion
     

A La Carte 

Initial nutrition consultation $125
Single, 50-minute follow-up nutrition consultation $90
Race nutrition plan $100 
Five, 50-minute follow-up nutrition consultations (must have an initial nutrition consultation; must be used within 6 months) $400 
Body composition, including estimated Resting Energy Expenditure $40 
Resting Metabolic Rate measurement $75 
Customized meal plan $75 per week
